Guest Blogger: Shannon Long, host of Pure Brews America
While my adept abilities in consuming and enjoying beer have opened many doors for me, my business in craft beer doesn’t actually begin with my beloved Pure Brews America! In fact, my love for this industry has shaped most of my academic and professional career. I studied at Michigan State University and became further cultured in beer (well, some other things too). During my undergraduate studies, I completed my thesis on Founders Brewing Co. and their export process, which afforded me the opportunity of exploring and meeting with a multitude of other Michigan breweries. Shortly thereafter, I founded Brew Export with the mission of sharing American craft beer with the world and helping everyone on Earth redefine what “good beer” means. Craft beer is my life and my passion, and nothing gives me greater joy than being able to share my love for Michigan beer on Pure Brews America!
Every day, I feel like the luckiest girl in the world! I have the unique privilege of traveling around the Midwest visiting the most wonderful microbreweries and brewpubs. All of my adventures are documented on camera for better or for worse! Fortunately, television industry critics acknowledged our hard work, as the show received a Michigan EMMY Award in 2017! You will follow me behind the scenes at the Midwest’s best craft breweries as Pure Brews America kicks off its third season on Saturday, July 8.
A brand new season of Pure Brews America returns for Season 3 featuring breweries from across Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois.
The Midwest produces some of the greatest craft beer in America, thanks to the unique styles and talented brewmasters that call it home. There is so much to see, learn about, and experience with Pure Brews America! For Season 3, I visit 16 craft breweries and meet the talented people that are the driving force behind the unique and delicious beers being produced. They share with me stories, successes, failures, and maybe even a secret or two about how they make the magic happen.

In each episode, I’ll introduce you to breweries as geographically diverse as Blackrocks Brewery in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula to Revolution Brewing in the heart of Chicago, focusing on the personalities, processes and unique creativity of independent craft brewers. Along with visits to different breweries, each episode contains a beef jerky and beer pairing from my friends at Jack Link’s as well as a few mixology tips from the crazy crew at Faygo. Finally, the world-class HopCat restaurant franchise features their chefs, who will provide culinary tips and show you how to incorporate craft beer into your kitchens.
I couldn’t end a blog without a couple of my favorite picks. If you haven’t tried either of these, you owe it to yourself to throw some in the cooler for your next backyard barbecue or beach excursion:
|Melt My Brain is an experimental Golden Ale brewed with coriander, juniper berries, limes and blended with tonic water to create the tasting experience of drinking a gin and tonic cocktail. The light body, touch of lime, and perfect carbonation make for a refreshing beer to sip on all summer long!
||Grapefruit IPA is a thirst quenching beer made for warm weather. This unique beer contains aromas of citrus and tropical fruits, a delicate grapefruit tartness and a sweet malty backbone ending in a clean finish.
With more than 5,000 craft breweries in the USA, I wouldn’t want to live anywhere else! Let’s raise a glass as I keep you informed about the incredible and unique craft beers that our country has to offer!
